BTTS is the most approachable market on the board and one of the least understood. The naive maths gets you close, then correlation quietly ruins it.
Both Teams To Score asks one question: will each side get at least one goal? No margin of victory, no result, no draw problem. That simplicity is exactly why it attracts enormous recreational volume — and why the pricing is more subtle than it appears.
The naive calculation
If the home team scores in a given match with probability P(H) and the away team with probability P(A), and if the two were independent, then:
P(BTTS) = P(H) × P(A)
With both sides at 75%, that gives 0.75 × 0.75 = 56.3%, or fair odds of about 1.78.
That last point is the one recreational bettors get wrong most often. "Both these teams always score" feels like a near-certainty and multiplies out to something close to even money.
Where the naive model breaks
The two events are not independent, and the errors run in both directions.
Match state changes behaviour
Once a goal goes in, both teams change how they play. A side that concedes early pushes forward, raising its own scoring chance and the opponent's. A side that leads late may retreat. The scoreline feeds back into the probabilities, which is precisely what independence assumes away.
Shared conditions
Heavy rain, a poor pitch, a cautious referee, or a tight knockout context suppress goals for both sides simultaneously. Correlated conditions mean the two probabilities move together rather than separately.
Mismatches suppress it
A large quality gap tends to reduce BTTS even when expected total goals is high, because the most likely path to lots of goals is one side scoring several while the other fails to score at all.
The practical implication: a fixture between two evenly matched attacking teams supports BTTS far better than a fixture with a huge favourite, even if both have identical total-goals expectations. Team quality gap matters more here than in almost any other goals market.
BTTS and Over 2.5 are not the same bet
They are heavily correlated and routinely confused. The distinction shows up in specific scorelines:

Because of that correlation, combining BTTS and Over 2.5 in an accumulator is usually poor value. You are paying margin twice on what is substantially one opinion, and bookmakers price correlated combinations with that in mind.
Where the market drifts
Recreational money has a documented tilt toward goals and toward "yes" outcomes. That pushes BTTS Yes prices shorter than the underlying probability justifies, particularly on well-known attacking teams and in televised fixtures.
The catch is that this tendency is thoroughly understood by the people setting prices. It is not free money sitting on the table — it is a known bias already largely absorbed into the line. Where residual value survives, it is generally in lower-profile fixtures where the modelling attention is thinner and the public tilt is weaker.
Build the estimate from the two scoring probabilities first, adjust for quality gap and conditions, and only then look at the price. Reversing that order lets the price anchor your opinion.
